SW MN Synod Assembly voting members will be electing the bishop for our synod. Bishops are elected every six years. They are the highest elected office of synod leadership. Given the importance of this role, the Bishop Election Committee is starting the process to elect the bishop now! Over the next months, you will receive publications, videos, guided discussions regarding this process. Our number one priority is to make this election as transparent and participatory as possible. We believe the Holy Spirit is at work in us all as we wrestle and discern together about the future for the ELCA and our future leadership.
Updated Information (4/9/2021):
The process for pre-identifying rostered leaders for the Office of Bishop in the Southwestern Minnesota Synod began with an invitational letter to the congregations in our synod. The Bishop Election Committee invited you, as baptized members, and your congregation to pray, discern, listen, and then bring forward one ELCA Minister of Word and Sacrament, in good standing, to the committee. Then, the committee invited each of our ten conferences to pre-identify up to five (5) ELCA Ministers of Word and Sacrament, in good standing. At this time, we have eight (8) ELCA Ministers of Word and Sacrament, in good standing, who have agreed to have their name go forward and have filled out the Biographical Data Form. On June 6, our assembly voting members will have the opportunity to nominate either one of these rostered leaders, or any ELCA Minister of Word and Sacrament, in good standing. (We strongly encourage you to ask the person prior to your nomination). Biographical information, along with the answers to six (6) questions, is linked below in alphabetical order.
We apologize for the confusion caused by the form that Pre-identified Pastors for Bishop completed with their responses to questions. The confusion occurred in the form itself. Our goal has always been to have an election process with integrity, transparency, and fairness, therefore, the first form was taken down. The new form is linked below and will be sent out. Please delete the old form if you have it. Thank you.
Prior to the opening of our Synod Assembly, all biographical information will be removed. We are now back to a clean slate. Our first ballot is an ecclesiastical (nominating) ballot. Each voting member of the assembly may write the name of one person who is eligible to serve as Synod Bishop. (This means that, even if a person was pre-identified, they must be nominated by a voting member of the assembly in order to enter the election process for bishop). And then the election process begins….
