Unexpected or ongoing medical expenses can be costly. Challenging to tackle. Overwhelming. Unlike other bills—mortgages, car payments, utilities, etc.—they are profoundly personal. They are reminders of the vulnerabilities and limitations of our corporal selves and those we love.
Some pastors and deacons and their households face unforeseen or ongoing medical expenses that may lead to financial struggles, and for some it may make their existing financial struggles worse.
To ease the burden of physical or mental health expenses the SW MN Synod’s rostered ministers and their families are facing, Gifts of Grace—a synod program—offers a Medical Expense Grant. Made possible over the past 8 years by generous donors in the synod and grants from Lilly Endowment Inc., this grant carries a message of connectedness, support, and love to those who receive it: you are not alone in this.
Between 2016 and 2023, 117 Medical Expense Grants were awarded—a total of $145,516 in grants in this period. In 2024, these figures continue to grow. Thank you to those of you who have given gifts to make this possible!
