SUMMARY:Zoom Conversation – Five Themes LeaderWise Hears For Lay Leaders
DESCRIPTION:For many congregations\, church-as-we-know-it is struggling and may soon vanish. When LeaderWise\, as church consultants\, work with congregations we often hear the same FIVE THEMES; however\, these FIVE THEMES hinder congregations from stepping into the future. Read a recent article by Rev. Cindy Halvorson\, a staff associate with LeaderWise about the FIVE THEMES and Why They Are the Death of the Church. \nJoin us Tuesday\, April 18th for Zoom conversation around the FIVE THEMES as we think together about what it means to “be the church” as society experiences significant shifts. \n\n2:00 p.m. will be a conversation with the Rostered Ministers\n7:00 p.m. will be a conversation with Lay Leaders.\n\nThese Zoom conversations will NOT be recorded for future use so please share this information with Rostered Ministers\, Congregation Councils\, and Lay Leaders because the conversation will be very beneficial to congregations. \nClick Here to RSVP and receive the Zoom Link

SUMMARY:Zoom Gathering: Stories of Thanksgiving – Energized Congregations are Generous Congregations
DESCRIPTION:A Stewardship Zoom Training for Rostered Ministers led by GSB Fundraising \nWhat if your congregation told stories of the way that the people’s lives are impacted by your ministry? What if the people who generously give of their time and resources to your congregation knew that their giving made a difference? \nRev. Pete Reuss will guide a practical conversation connecting stories and thanking\, looking at the impact they can have on your ministry. This Zoom gathering will be recorded for future use. \nThink back over the past few years and think of all the people in your congregation who selflessly stepped forward to ensure your ministry remained strong. Your congregation found creative ways to share God’s love. Now is a great time thank people. \n\nZoom Link:\nTopic: Stories of Thanksgiving – Energized Congregations are Generous Congregations\nTime: Aug 17\, 2023 01:00 PM Central Time (US and Canada) \nClick this link to join the Zoom meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/5076373904 \nMeeting ID: 507 637 3904

SUMMARY:Zoom Gathering: Telling Stories – Exciting Congregations
DESCRIPTION:A Stewardship Zoom Training for all congregation leaders led by GSB Fundraising \nMost church communications focus on WHAT the congregation does. We talk about the number of people fed at a dinner\, or the number of kids in Sunday School\, or the number of homebound visits the congregations makes. This information is nice but doesn’t tell the whole story. \nWhat if your congregation started telling stories of WHY your congregation matters? These stories of how people’s lives have been impacted and changed by your congregation help people to see God at work among you. \nIt’s the difference between saying that 10 youth went on a service trip and hearing one of them tell how they encountered God’s love in amazing ways on the trip. One is information. The other is inspiration. \nPaul Marsh will lead a practical conversation about how you can identify and tell these stories in your context. This Zoom gathering will be recorded for future use.  \n\nZoom Link:\nTopic: Telling Stories – Exciting Congregations\nTime: Aug 17\, 2023 06:00 PM Central Time (US and Canada) \nClick this link to join the Zoom meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/5076373904 \nMeeting ID: 507 637 3904 \n

SUMMARY:2023 Fall Theological Conference
DESCRIPTION:Location: Holiday Inn & Suites Airport\, 2040 W. Russell St.\, Sioux Falls\, SD.\n\nThe 2023 Fall Theological Conference is planned especially for Pastors\, Deacons\, TEEM Students\, Interns\, Synod Authorized Lay Ministers currently serving a congregation\, and paid staff youth coordinators.\n\n \nIn the liturgy of ordination\, those called to rostered ministry commit\, and ask God’s help\, to preach\, teach\, and nourish God’s people with the word. We receive a stole as a sign of being obedient to Jesus and the responsibility entrusted to us. This call to ministry is one of serving the word. \nThis ministry then involves “serving-up” the word in worship through liturgy\, preaching\, and sacraments\, in teaching\, visitation\, prayer\, and conversation. We are called\, as it were\, to deliver the word to others \nIn the past three years\, however\, the opportunities and means of serving the word have changed significantly. It is in-person. And it is online. It is both/and. And as Lutherans\, we embrace our heritage of “both/and” theology. Saint/sinner. Law/gospel. Free/bound. \nWhen Jason Moore’s presentations on communication\, worship\, and church hospitality started circulating this year\, he caught our attention. We spoke with him to learn more about what he means by both/and. We heard his theological perspective for in-person and online worship\, reasons for continuing both in-the-building and online worship\, ideas for repurposing in-person homework to reach people online\, and thinking about what creates warmth and hospitality for people online and in-person. Wherever you are in this brave new world – longing for your old typewriter & cassette player or producing your own services – this Fall Theological Conference will help all of us think seriously about the “why” for our call to serve the word and share the story of the love of Jesus with ever-expanding circles of people who long to hear good news! \nSo come! Gather with friends you haven’t met yet\, and those who are familiar. Come to Sioux Falls\, October 8-10\, 2023 for the SW MN Synod’s Fall Theological Conference and explore what it means to be people who embrace the “Both/And” of in person and online community\, and what that means for our congregations and us as leaders in the church. Speaker\, Jason Moore of Midnight Oil Productions\, will help us explore the theological and practical implications of in-person and online worship and hospitality. \nLast year we gathered at one of our great camps to the north. Each year\, we’ll change things up a bit! So this year\, we’re going southwest\, and the venue will be the Holiday Inn\, Airport\, Sioux Falls. This hotel is accustomed to welcoming a big crowd\, providing a place where you will be well-tended\, includes nearby a golfing option\, and provides opportunity to explore downtown Sioux Falls. We heard your pleas for more free time – so that will be provided! \nWe look forward to learning and growing together as people who serve the Word in this new time today. \n\nRegistration:Registration deadline: Friday\, September 22nd \nThe registration fee is per person:\n \n$135 regular registration$85 per person reduced registration (only for grads awaiting first call\, interns\, on-leave-from-call\, and retired pastors not serving in an interim position)The registration fee includes the conference fee\, Monday lunch\, snacks\, and refreshments. \nClick here to register.\nPlease pay online or send Payment to SW MN Synod\, PO Box 499\, Redwood Falls\, MN 56283. \nHousing arrangements and cost is separate from the FTC registration fee.\nAll attendees are responsible for their own housing arrangements. The block of rooms is under the Southwestern Minnesota Synod block.Because of the limited number of rooms available\, please consider having a roommate. You must book your room by September 8\, 2023. After this date\, the block of rooms is inactive.\n \nHoliday Inn & Suites Airport\n2040 W. SUMMARY:SW MN Synod Ethics and Boundaries for Ministers Training
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date \nTuesday\, November 21\, 2023\n9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nIn Person at the SW MN Synod Office in Redwood Falls\, MN\n$40 per person \nClick here to register! \nSexual misconduct by rostered and other religious leaders is one of the most serious challenges faced by the church today. Violation of the sacred trust between church members and their leaders brings deep pain to all who are affected: victims\, offenders\, family members\, friends\, and the congregation itself. \nIn response to this challenge\, the Southwestern Minnesota Synod bylaws include the following provisions (S14.25.01. and S14.47.01.): “Within twelve months of assuming office all rostered ministers of under call shall demonstrate completion of at least six contact hours of continuing education in the prevention of sexual boundary violations.” \nOur synod council created a continuing resolution encouraging all of our rostered leaders to have continued work on appropriate boundaries of all kinds\, but especially sexual boundaries\, every three years. \nAttending Another Boundaries Training?\nGreat! Thank you for complying with the SW MN Synod’s bylaws. Please send supporting information such as workshop agendas\, certificates\, or course syllabus to Kristin Bakeberg at kristin.bakeberg@swmnelca.org or mail to SW MN Synod\, PO Box 499\, Redwood Falls\, MN 56283. \nUpcoming Workshop Opportunity: \n\nBoundary Workshop: Exploring Personal and Communal Boundaries\nThursday\, Nov. 2\, 2023 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.\nAugustana Lutheran Church\, West St Paul

SUMMARY:Safety and Security for Churches Zoom Gathering
DESCRIPTION:No matter where congregations are located\, no matter the size\, congregation leaders are aware that we need to plan for the safety and security of the people who come through our doors\, staff and worshipers. Retired Kenyon Police Chief Lee Sjolander provides training to help you make plans to develop your own safety & security practices. \nZoom Gathering Recordings:  \n\nSession for Rostered Ministers\nSession for Lay Leaders \n\nDuring his time as police chief in Kenyon MN\, Chief Lee served in law enforcement\, but also was deeply known and respected for his role as mentor\, dog whisperer\, community leader\, an active lay leader in his home ELCA congregation\, and a drummer in a local band. Chief Lee brings a deep care for the safety and wellbeing of church leaders and congregations after serving in a small town/rural community and working in partnership with the congregations and religious leaders of that community.  He has helped rostered and lay leaders think about safety for our people while we engage in vibrant ministry in ways that are rooted in daily realities and lived experiences.
